Fun fact:

British chemist Sir Humphry Davy invented the carbon arc lamp circa 1807 when experimenting with batteries and two strips of carbon that would literally arc a spark to create light. The lamp was used commercially in the 1870s for large building and street lighting. It was superseded by the incandescent light made famous by Thomas Edison in 1879.
